When Online Marketing Stops Being Effective

A recent Inc. article explored something many leaders and marketers are noticing: some traditional (or “old school,” according to the article) marketing tactics are becoming effective again.

Why? Digital spaces are crowded, noisy, and increasingly expensive. Many brands are seeing lower engagement, fewer clicks, and longer conversion timelines online.

Have you noticed this pattern with your own online marketing efforts?

According to the article, these four “throwback” strategies are making a comeback:

  1. Direct mail

  2. Blogging

  3. Community-based marketing

  4. Physical media

What these tactics have in common is simple: they create stronger connection, more trust, and a more memorable brand experience.

That doesn’t mean abandoning digital marketing. It means building a smarter mix of marketing strategies that includes revisiting proven strategies through a modern lens.

A word of caution: in my professional experience, weak marketing results don’t always mean the marketing campaign itself isn’t working. Often, it’s a weak brand that dilutes the marketing efforts.

That’s why I’m an advocate for building a strong brand first that will then support your marketing efforts.
