What is a Brand Guide and Why Do You Need One?
A brand guide is a document that outlines the key elements of your brand's identity, ensuring consistency across all communications. It can range from a simple style guide to a comprehensive brand playbook.
A style guide is a document in which the elements of the brand's visual identity are presented (approved logos, color palette(s), typography, other graphics and imagery) along with guidelines for appropriate usage of those elements. Your brand designer should have provided one for you when your brand was created.
A brand playbook contains more robust brand information and guidelines. This includes the visual and style elements of the brand along with foundational brand elements, brand voice and messaging, and any other information that is critical to know about the brand.
As your brand evolves, update your brand identity guide to ensure it reflects the most current and accurate brand information.
Three Reasons You Need a Brand Guide:
Comprehensive Brand Resource: A brand guide contains all your brand details in one place and is a valuable resource for anyone affiliated with your brand. It also saves time and money on major decisions and creative projects.
Communication + Collaboration: It streamlines communication between your team, vendors, and partners. By following the same brand rules, everyone stays aligned with your brand identity.
Consistency: Having one set of brand rules to follow allows for greater consistency wherever your brand is visible. This consistency will make it easier for customers to recognize and remember your organization, ultimately leading to increased credibility and customer loyalty.
How Do You Create a Brand Guide?
Creating a brand guide is as simple as starting a Google or Word document and writing down notes about the brand. You can import images of your logos, color palette, and other brand assets. If you want a "fancy" guide, ask a graphic designer to help you. Canva is also a good resource for document design templates you can customize for your own use.
